Settling down again

May has seen download volumes of over 200 Gigabits again. It looks as if much of this is in direct response to the tweets although Twitter Analytics doesn't seem to record them as link clicks.  The geographical focus for the site has moved to South East Asia and so I try to time the tweets for early morning here late afternoon / early evening there - not so good for the USA. Some of the re-tweets have produced dramatic i.e. 10 fold daily peaks in impressions. Meanwhile the volume of searches has shown some dramatic surges which are probably linked in some way I have yet to discern. All in all the Twitter campaign is continuing to perform well it is spreading awareness of the less frequently visited corners of the site while booting popularity of the favorites like Beethoven's Symphonies and the Can Can. So we will continue to refine and develop the content and be led by the audience response. My Rotary Club has also received it's first donation from the site so pe...

Getting the wrinkles out

It takes a little while for every new version of my website to settle down and this was no exception. The software I use these days is very good at handling the graphical presentation of the site but maintaining the links to the content has been more of a knife and fork job i including the use of FTP to get the files in the right folders. So apologies for those 404 errors. There were also a few Mobile errors which Google picked up and I have fixed almost all of those which is handy because according to Google Analytics about 45% of my traffic now comes from mobile devices. The tweeting campaign has actually benefited from Twitter's removal of the edit and re-tweet option as it forced me to organise them in a Word document for the daily cut and paste. As you would expect from repetitive tweeting there is a steady modest response to each tweet presumably from occasional visitors to the various #tag streams I address but occasionally a re-tweet or favourite response will send ...

The Mobile Update

Wow - good job it was a long weekend so that I could complete the Mobile website update. The software I have been using to design and build the site is not really geared up for even medium sized sites like this one and there is a lot of copy and pasting involved followed by quite a bit of correction especially of download links. On the other hand the graphic design functionality is brilliant and it has been a lot easier to produce a consistently high quality visual image. However the internet does provide some very prompt feedback and Android is now the pre-eminent operating system used by site visitors for the first time.  Some of the download file sizes may be a bit big for some mobile users and we might need to restore file sizes for the mobile version. There are undoubtedly outstanding issues to resolve but I'll get to those in due course. I have taken the opportunity to update some of the text but the basic structure of the site has been retained there is just a mobile...
This month has seen continuing progress with download volumes over 200 gigabits for the first time. Twitter analytics now provides data on the performance of individual tweets.  The links into site pages seem to be ineffective so I have replaced them with repeats of Download2MP3 to see if I can boost the search levels on the brand. Android is the second most poular visitor operating system.  The site redesign with a mobile variant is progressing well but Google's 21st April deadline may be missed because it is more important to get all the details right than miss a bit of traffic. Responses to donation requests are now being forwarded directly to my Rotary club donate page for online processing but no noticeable change yet. An example of the need to get things right - in the website redesign process I noticed that I had overlooked the Rachmaninoff page which has some beautiful new arrangements. As there were no links to it there had been no visits or downloads but a n...

Let the Tweets continue

The Twitter campaign continues to generate a similar level of traffic. I have moved away from the use of the YouTube videos to direct links to MP3 files on the site.  It appears that there is a relatively modest level of direct click through to these files but that the level of Google searches for the pieces or the composers responds. I was concerned that daily repetition would result in diminishing returns but the modest level of variation of time of day and #tags used has been sufficient to  keep it going. More recently there has also been some gratifying re-tweet and favourite activity. Evidence of the significance of Mobile devices in the user base has continued to mount and so I have embarked on the upgrade to a mobile compatible site. No small task as it goes but substantial progress has been made in recent weeks. The geographical source of our users has also shifted with India ousting the USA from the top slot which is followed by Indonesia and Egypt. I am als...

Twitter campaign response

We have now completed three months of the daily tweeting campaign and the response is very strong and very clear. This month we will download 170 gigabyte of music. In the last week every single one of our recordings was downloaded at least once which has definitely never happened before. We have moved the emphasis away from You Tube based tweets to a mainly download link basis not least because the number of You Tube downloads has been relatively modest. We have also seen some of the more recent tweets Favorited. It is difficult to interpret the organic search results along side the Twitter campaign but we seem to have gained a sustained benefit from the last major algorithm update and this has plateaued now. They now represent nearly a third of the visits to the site rather than ninety percent prior to the Twitter campaign. For the first time the largest geographical source of the Google traffic is India followed by the USA, Egypt, Indonesia and the UK. But it looks as if the...

Exciting year

The new level of traffic on the site has been sustained to the year end. The extra volume make it much more interesting and challenging. We now know that the twitter campaign needs to be sustained daily to maintain these traffic levels and that it seems to prompt Google searches as well as direct click through from the links in the tweets. The emphasis of the campaign has broadened out from the YouTube video links to include links to some of our new MP3s supported by pictures of the composers and this has proved effective in drawing visitors in to hear some of the new compositions. The huge interest in Beethoven continues and much of it stems from India and Indonesia. Who knew that use of the gamelan would cause so much interest in it's home land? The challenge for the coming year is to build on this success and convert interest and appreciation into donations

Roller coaster month

The Google Panda impact is slowing down but we have now had 350 keywords on the first page during the month. In the last week at the margin things are falling back a little but the proportion of direct access it now much higher. Concurrently with these Google developemnts we have been running a Twitter campaign using our You Tube videos and direct links to download and play (subject to browser settings) selected MP3s. I  have been going up a steep learning curve in the music related hash tag landscape with opportunites to be overlooked on a never seen hash tag or to drowing in an overwhelming stream. So it is a bit hard to disentangle what is causing what and the volume of direct accesses is a bit confusing. It is gratifying to see that more of the content of the site is being seen and even more so heard. The download volume this month is almost 90 Gigabits spread over more than 300 of our 500 tracks. This is probably 10 times the previous long run rate so I'm getting some val...

Google bubble up continues

We now have 250 first page search phrase positions - more than double our previous best. And it is still going on - we're on a roll. Let's hope it is not a roller coaster this time. Click throughs from 150 search phrases including some that look like arabic. Weeks worth of download in one day yesterday.

Can't believe it is nearly ten years ...

This year has seen mixed results until recently - the iTunes help page fell from prominence and we lost a significant source of traffic as Apple finally provided their own. Traffic was not really impacted by the release of another 150 tracks and the addition of several new composers, nor by the addition of feature recordings like the Ride of the Valkerie and the 1812 Overture. Most recently we have added my Rotary Club's My Donate button to the Donate page and put links into the how donationware works panel and that has brought the Donate page into the top ten pages in recent weeks. But the really big change has been caused by Google's latest algorithm update, Penguin, which has had a massive impact on our rankings across the piece but particularly with Beethoven related searches.  Evidently some less ethical sites have been demoted and we have bubbled up on to many more first pages. This has coincided with a decision to have a go at promoting the site on Twitter. I hav...

Early Days of a new Site design

So far the new site seems to be working OK. I used a bad link checker to eliminate those and eventually submitted a sitemap.xml which Google were prepared to accept. There are still lots more pages to remove from Google even though I have dealt the main directories that have been deleted  I'm not sure how effective that will be.  I also have a bit more work to do to customise the 404 missing page message system. The site is much smaller now - only 53 pages - so it will be interesting to see what effect that has. The Beethoven Symphony movements still seem to be the most popular downloads.

Major Site Re-design Published

With the wide spread of broadband internet connections - the big decision this time was to abandon the LoFi clips. That meant that the individual pages for each piece could go too, The removal of Google Ads and the simple links to the MP3 files meant it was time for a total visual overhaul but we have kept most of the main page structure. Our previous authoring programme is past it's sell by date too so we have gone for the latest Zara Web Design package.  It took a little while to get used to it but they provided excellent support when I got stuck. The pages are all published now but take a while to propagate and there is still some snagging to do. The video clips need to be updated and they will be restored once that has been tackled. Even more important there are lots more recordings on the stocks and this update will clear the way for them to be added easily and quickly. Hope you like the new set up - any feedback welcome.

Substantial Site Overhaul Completed

Two phase operation for site wide update completed. In phase one links to 30 second LoFi clips and to complete HiFi MP3 file downloads were added to all the relevant pages - about 60 of them.  The clips are playable by the Yahoo! Media Player but the full files are not so they are available to save or play on the users media software once they are downloaded. This makes the 300  individual product pages pretty redundant but they are not pulling their weight from any point of view these days so we are concentrating on front of house. At the same time a new emphasis on the Donationware aspect of the site was incorporated. Several approaches have been tried and we hope that results will guide subsequent refinement. Also the video windows were increased to full size on as many pages as possible. The You Tube channel is looking pretty good so we are also starting to emphasise that.  I suspect that is responsible for much of the recent growth in keyword searches on our brand...

Clip Playing and Downloading from the main pages

Another significant (I hope) site wide update is underway. The composer and collection pages are being update with download buttons and clip player buttons for all recordings. Now that we have gone donation ware for our recordings there is less value in the 300 individual recording pages.  In particular they don't pay their way from an advertising revenue point of view.  But they do strengthen the overall scale and coherence of the linking structure on the site so we'll keep them until there is a problem with them. More controversially the download links are comprised of reminders to consider making a donation. I'm not sure how this will play in SEO terms but I'm willing to try anything that might have an impact on that front. It should also be possible to test whether particular words or phrases impact on download behavior. I've taken the UK Gift Aid link off because it was broken and I'll come back to that when our Rotary club has registered it...

iTunes and iPad pages updated

I have summarised the results of my Apple compatibility research on these pages and tidied up the meta data a bit. Trying the iPad again last evening I'm even more convinced that the Free Music Downloader for iPad App is the way to go with the opportunities for play lists et cetera to organise and shuffle your downloads. There is also a paid for version "Free Music Download Pro" for the iPhone and iPod which is available in the App Store. To be honest the very simple filing system on the iPad is a bit of a culture shock to some one who cut their computing  teeth time sharing on a mainframe with a telegraphy terminal - paper tape and all. But I guess it is good for what it is intended for and mobile users are likely to become a progressively larger part of our audience.

Looking through the Apple glass

It has been an interesting few days exploring Apple compatibility issues for video and file download. For video HTML5 seems to offer the best hope in the long run but the current confusion makes for a very laborious process to publish videos that can be seen on all the main platforms. At the moment I think I'm going to wait a while and see if You Tube's developments deliver the goods. In the meantime I'm going to recommend iPad users buy the mobile iCab browser which enables MP3 download and also plays my YouTube videos with the reservation that they may need to be resourceful users since the help files are only available in German. More interestingly there are also free iPad Apps for MP3 download storage and playing which I can recommend - still exploring how to get them across to iTunes but I'm reasonably hopeful. I've still got to check out the Mac itself @ younger daughter's house but I'm guessing that iCab will be useful there too.

Apples on the Distaff side

In our family Apple computers, iPhones and an iPad have been adopted by the distaff side which is the majority which does it's best to overwhelm me. I bought an Apple IIe and a Mac once but that was in another century. So having eliminated Flash streaming software I am now exploring how to make the site more accessible to them. I was a bit shocked to find that the Google Ads on my site don't show on the iPad and neither do the embedded videos. I have identified a potential solution for downloading and so I'll be getting the app and testing it out.  The embedded videos will require more research. In the mean time visitors from Windows platforms have started to download in some numbers - just waiting for the donations to kick in!

Download2MP3.com adopts RI End Polio Now

With the move to a free download site we have introduced requests for donations from those who enjoy the music. This is a step in the dark but the advertising revenue now pays for the ISP service we have moved to and sadly OS Commerce has become more difficult to maintain. So we have adopted the Rotary International End Polio Now Fund as our preferred charity. We have waited on tenterhooks for India to complete a Polio Free Year and that has been confirmed in the last few weeks. So we are really close - with just Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan to go. It was particularly encouraging to hear this week that Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to work together to tackle this problem - no doubt Rotary and the other NGOs involved will get in behind this with the relevant financial and technical support. Our existing Business account with PayPal means that we are able to offer the Donate button and associated facilities. For UK tax Payers we offer an alternative route where their do...

300 MP3 are Free to Download

A dramatic shift in direction for the site was implemented this week. From now on the full HiFi MP3 recordings of our original arrangement are available to download free of charge. Some visitors have already spotted this opportunity and started to down load their favorites. This change has also seen the elimination of the two Flash based players for the clips published on the site and their replacement with a Yahoo! player. This seems to works across all the platforms I've identified so far but deploys cookies to identify what is going on. The other new feature is an updated Downloading Tips page which goes into the right and left click options on the four main browsers. The next job is to work up advice for Mac and iPad users who have been hindered by the flash used previously.

Clip Player Launched

With the advent of video clips served by YouTube like this Buck Due Rag: I have had to review and modify the way selections of samples are offered from various pages on the site. Mostly I had switched off the automatic player to avoid the risk of intereference. The controls on the player are wquite small and I suspect that visitors would not know how to stop it. Eventually I had the idea of creating a separate clip player page - it's small so I made it a pop-up and now I've put it behind an image in the side bar. I am hoping that this will give me better visibiliuty of the usage and I will be able to experiment with the playlist and monitor the results more easily. You can get it here. This has already dramatically reduced daily bandwidth consumption and set me thinking about my hosting arrangements and I realise that I have not been keeping up with developments here. More on this later.
